iStat-With Video

iStat

iStat is one of the couple memory utility apps on the app store. Others include Free Memory, iInfo, and a couple others that I can’t think of. The only two in the app store that can free memory is Free Memory (no pun intended) and iStat. So what makes iStat worth the extra buck? As well as monitoring your ipod, you can monitor your mac (any mac, macbook pro, mac mini, imac etc.). Some other features include, a better icon =P, a pinging service, and a traceroute service. Now yes it seems like the perfect utility, but two things it doesn’t have are processes happening, and battery level, if they put that in, they are golden; they as in Bjango, the developer. Below is a little video demo of the app working, enjoy =]:

It’s only two dollars, so I suggest getting it. You can free up more memory with this app than with free memory, and also the remote servers monitering is awesome!
Overall its a 4 out of 5, if they add those two things, they’re golden, and I’ll put it up to a 5 out of 5.

Duck Hunt–A fun time waster [Updated]

UPDATE: Duck Hunt is no longer available at Nintendo’s request.

Remember that old Nintendo Duck Hunt game?

If you do (or don’t), you can now play it again on your iPhone! LawlMart has released a port of the popular Duck Hunt game that includes mini-games: 1 Duck and 2 Ducks. Main Menu

The interface for Duck Hunt isn’t very good, but I will let that slide because its made to be exactly like it was when played on Nintendo systems of the past.

There are only two options for how to play. You can play 1 Duck or 2 Ducks. A game with 1 duck involves shooting at just 1 at a time. Two ducks involves shooting at two ducks at a time.

After playing around with Duck Hunt for a few days, I have to say its pretty good, but it definitely has room for imporvement. The method for shooting the ducks takes some getting used to. The crosshairs for shooting are offset about and inch or two from where your finer is. It should probably be reduced to less than an inch.

Overall, Duck Hunt is pretty good, and for $0.99, I would recommend it if you want something fun to do for a few minutes every once and a while.

One thing to note: There have been whispes that Nintendo will get this App Removed from the App Store. So, if you want it, you should act fast.

I give this app 3.5 stars out of 5. It almost feels like maybe Duck Hunt was released early, as the controls don’t work very well, and other things just don’t seem right. That said, its perfectly useable and still fun.

Newsstand–An excellent RSS reader

When I originally saw Newsstand, I thought it looked nice, but wasn’t the right RSS reader for me…so I went with the free netnewswire. NNW is a free app from NewsGator which syncs with their free online and desktop RSS clients. (FeedDemon, NetNewsWire for Mac).

I’ll have to admit, the syncing of feeds from my iPod touch to my desktop feed reader was great. But, as I started to get more and more feeds, NetNewsWire started to get harder to use. There was no way to see my flagged articles, view offline posts from all feeds, and there were some syncing issues.

So, I took the leap and got Newsstand ($4.99). While it doesn’t currently sync with any feed services, I have found that many of it’s features outweigh that missing feature.

Newsstand can import feeds from an existing Bloglines or Google Reader. It also has the ability to search for RSS feeds as well as add feeds by URL. (there is no ability to add feeds in NetNewsWire). Once you have added/imported your feeds, Newsstand begins to shine.

When I say shine, I mean it. Newsstand features an amazing and stunning coverflow-like interface when the device is in a horizontal orientation. You can flip through your feeds and articles, which show up like newspapers in a rack.

When Newsstand is vertically oriented, your feeds show up in a nice list view. You can re-order your feeds by tapping the edit button and dragging them around. Once in the list of articles under a feed, you can send the list of articles to a friend When viewing articles, you can flag the article, send it to a friend, and view it with Newsstand’s internal browser.

The internal browser is quite good. It features and forward/back button, which was a feature that is missing from many RSS readers.

Even though it lacks syncing abilities, I have made Newsstand my only iPhone RSS reader. I still have to deal with feeds showing as unread in my computers newsgator app because Newsstand doesn’t sync. With that said, it’s not that huge of a deal. I spoke with the developer ff Newsstand, and he hinted at future syncing to and from Google Reader. When asked about syncing with Newsgator, he said there were some big licensing fees required to do that.

The last thing I’m going to mention in this review is feed updating. The updating of feeds in Newsstand is pretty fast. It updates up to 3 feeds at once, and takes a few seconds to do each set of 3. (again, it’s pretty darn fast). I think the feeds should be updated automatically upon launching the app. Hopefully the developer adds that.

I give this app 4.5 stars out of 5.

Here is a quickly/poorly made video showing the coverflow type interface.
