BiteSMS – Your Solution to Messaging

Now, I have been using iRealSMS for quite some time now. It’s decent and all, but it just has too many bugs, and the devs haven’t released an update in a good while. So, I decided to look elsewhere for my messaging needs, and I came up to BiteSMS. BiteSMS includes four things, their own network for you to send messages out of, a replacement SMS app, quickreply, and quickcompose. Overall, I have been very satisfied with the app in general.

The Bite Network is a network of it’s own where you can send messages from, rather than your carrier. The prices are much cheaper. At 12 cents per message, I agree (in the U.S.). You can buy credits right from inside the app. (Each credit allows you to send one message) To enable sending from the Bite network you can either go into the setttings and do so, or you can hold down the send button until it turns pink.

Next, the replacement app offers the ability to view the contacts pictures for each conversation. Then, when you go into a conversation, and you highlight a message like you were going to copy it, you can see the timestamp for that message, which I love. The last difference is that there’s a button on top that goes to the app’s settings.

Quickreply and quickcompose are the two most needed built in features for the iPhone. In my opinion, Bite does the best job to implement it. When you get a text, quickreply pops up, and you can mark any message you get as read or unread by checking or unchecking a blue bubble on the left of the popup. Also, there’s a button to open the message in the actually app, or to call the person texting you! It is bug free, so naturally it’s better than iReal’s version.

And finally quickcompose, all you have to do is touch volume up then touch the screen. Both quickreply and quickcompose work on the lockscreen. For quickreply touch the little pink box when you get a message to activate quickreply, and for quickcompose just put the volume up. You can hide the popup by pressing the x in the top right corner, or you can press the home button.

BiteSMS has devs who are quick to respond, and are quick to develop. They offer two types of licenses, one 12 month one you get when you buy credits, and one lifetime one, which is 9 dollars. For anyone who texts at least 200 messages a month I suggest this, it will be a lot better than having to go into the messages app to reply, and it will be a lot better than any other messaging replacement app out there. There’s a beta repo that you can find on their website, bitesms.com. It has the most up to date version, which is the one I reviewed.

iFile – Finder for the iPhone!

You would think that apple would include some sort of finder, but noooo, they don’t because they want you to prevent customization. Here is where jailbreaking comes into play, but that’s for another post another day. Now, I must begin in saying that this app is for jailbroken phones ONLY. Apple doesn’t allow of such misconduct =P. Anyway, iFile allows you to view, copy, paste, delete, rename etc. files on your device. But, something awesome about it that isn’t in finder for mac, is the fact that it has a built in text editor so you can edit things right from the app! This allows you to edit plist files, header files, html files, etc. right on your device! So, this means if you were to have a theme that you’re creating you can edit widgets right on your phone! Also you could edit string files and such.

Next, the app has a built in zip viewer and extractor. Not only can it extract zip files but 7z, rar, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, tar.Z, tgz, tbz2, gz, bz2, and deb too! Speaking of deb files, it can install them directly within the app. This is especially useful for testing betas and such. This way you won’t have to deal with terminal and such.

Another great feature is how you can search through all your files on your device. Just scroll up some and there’s the search bar. This is especially useful when an apt is installed and then you don’t know where it’s library folder is. You can search three different ways, simple, wildcard and regular expression, each giving a more specific way to search.

The app has a nice Finder feature of quickview. You can see pictures as thumbnails, and hear the music, without opening another app. It has the ability to open a file or folder outside of the from another app with an iFile:// prefix. This means that another app could download a file from the web then open that file with iFile. This app is called Safari Download Manager, which I’m trying to get a review build for, but the dev hasn’t responded to my email yet. This would be awesome, you download a theme and then edit it to your likings and then set the theme.

The app has built in viewers for /most/ files. It can pdf, html (web viewer), images(not psd), Microsoft office files, .pages files, and can play all audio files that the device can. Theres many other little features, but there’s too many to say! These are the main resons that the app is appealing to everybody, so it should be to you!

It’s only four dollars on the cydia store. Just go into cydia and type “iFile,” pay the $4 fee and then install it. Easy as pie!
It’s well worth the money and it just goes towards further development of the app. The developer is a great guy, and if you have any concerns just look over to his iFile site where you can find contact info and such: Link.

iRealSMS

iRealSMS is a jailbroken only app that can replace the built in SMS app! It adds many new features, as well as enhances a few.

To start off, you can view each SMS individually rather than in conversations. You can create drafts and templates as well. But, you can also view in conversations, which I like better. Under the conversations tab you can view it like it is in the built in SMS app or have a different theme which gives you a few more options. These options include quick reply within the window, a new window to reply, forward, and blacklist. Speaking of blacklist, you can blacklist certain numbers or contacts, or messages! It’s a very nice feature. You can have it autodelete the blacklisted messages. You can search through your SMS by the name of a person or the content in a message. And there are two unique things called quickreply and quick send. But we’ll get to that later. You can make the iRealSMS app your default SMS app, and you can also run it in the background so that it opens quicker. You can have it show an icon in the statusbar when you have a new SMS and you can password protect the app.

Quickreply and quicksend:

These features are where you get an SMS and the you don’t have to quit an app to reply, or if you want to send an SMS you don’t have to quit the app to send. Rather than the normal popup when you get an SMS you get a different one whereas the keyboard pops up and you can reply or call the person that sent you the text. Quicksend works when you either press volume up, you press volume up and then you touch the icon that appears, or you double tap the home button. I personally use volume up with touch.

I highly suggest this app if you text a lot. If you don’t text a lot, don’t worry about it. But if you do, it makes replying and sending much better. I don’t use the built in app really, just the quickreply and quicksend.
